Belgium is a true innovation leader and stands out for its ongoing commitment to technological development and research. The Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2023 highlights the country's outstanding performance; it is ranked as an Innovation Leader with an innovation index of 125.8, significantly exceeding the European Union (EU) average.

 

Belgium's three regions: key players in innovation

Each region of the country makes a significant contribution to the country's Innovation Leader status.

 

Brussels Capital Region - innovative excellence

The Brussels Capital Region ranks as an Innovation Leader, with an impressive index of 129.3, occupying 28th place at regional level. This outstanding performance demonstrates the Belgian capital's commitment to innovation and technological growth.

 

Flanders - a crucial contribution

Flanders also stands out as an Innovation Leader, posting a remarkable index of 130.3 and ranking 23rd in Europe. This position reflects the Region's focus on research and development.

 

Wallonia - a strong innovator

Although the Walloon Region is slightly behind the other two, it ranks as a Strong Innovator with an innovation index of 113.5, placing it 60th in Europe. This highlights the diversity of innovative approaches across Belgium's regions.

 

A leading European ranking

According to the European Innovation Scoreboard 2023, Belgium is one of the innovation champions. Denmark took the lead as innovation champion, while Sweden, which has topped the rankings in recent years, finished second. Other innovation champions are Finland and the Netherlands. These countries stand out by far exceeding the EU average, testifying to their exceptional commitment to innovation.

 

Methodology of the Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2023

The Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2023 follows the methodology of the European Innovation Scoreboard 2023, using data from 239 European regions. These regions are divided into four groups according to their regional innovation index: Innovation Leaders, Strong Innovators, Moderate Innovators and Emerging Innovators.

Belgium maintains its status as an innovation leader thanks to the exceptional performance of its regions. The Brussels Capital Region, the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region collectively contribute to positioning the country among the major players in European innovation. This success demonstrates Belgium's ongoing commitment to remaining at the forefront of research and technological progress.
