The new Charleroi airport terminal, officially named T2, was unveiled this week. It is set to support the continued development of the country's second airport and should enable it to reach a capacity of 10 million passengers within a few years.
With a surface area of 5,800 m2, the new terminal has eight check-in desks, three boarding gates and two conveyor belts for luggage collection in arrivals.
"Eventually, with terminal 2, we will be able to achieve 10 million passengers. Initially, T2 will be open during peak times and used to relieve the pressure on terminal 1, to allow a more comfortable experience for passengers", explained the CEO of BSCA, Jean-Jacques Cloquet.
In 2016, Charleroi airport accommodated a record 7.3 million passengers, which is a 5% rise on 2015.
A few weeks ago, the airport also began the procedures that would enable it to open a 3,200-metre runway in a few years.
More good news for the airport: from October Ryanair will be connecting Charleroi to Eilat in Israel. There will be two flights a week to this Red Sea resort popular with holidaymakers and particularly divers.
