Since March, a regular rail service has been operating between Liège Trilogiport and Trnava, Slovakia. Once a week, Hödlmayr, one of Europe's leading automotive logistics companies, dispatches a train carrying vehicles in containers from the Liège Trilogiport multimodal platform, operated by Novandi.
This new connection demonstrates Liège Trilogiport's ability to accommodate rail freight services and highlights the growing importance of shifting freight transport from road to rail and inland waterways.
The reopening of the railway line serving Liège Trilogiport is a key milestone in the Port of Liège's strategic vision. Over the past year, the Port of Liège has worked closely with the Walloon Public Service (SPW), Infrabel and Novandi to restore rail operations at Liège Trilogiport and bring the railway line back into service.
A tangible demonstration of the platform's multimodal capabilities
This regular rail service perfectly illustrates Liège Trilogiport's core mission: to provide a logistics platform that seamlessly combines inland waterways, rail and road transport.
Located at the heart of Europe's major transport corridors, the platform enables efficient logistics flows while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of freight transport. Depending on its capacity, each vehicle train removes the equivalent of around 40 trucks from the road. With one train operating every week, more than 2,000 truck journeys per year can be avoided, helping to ease road congestion and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Thanks to this development, Liège Trilogiport now offers a truly comprehensive logistics solution, with rail transport providing a major complementary alternative to inland waterway shipping. This milestone has a positive impact on mobility and further strengthens the Port of Liège's role as one of Wallonia's leading logistics hubs.
