Wallonia showcases its unique nuclear medicine value chain at EANM Barcelona

The annual congress of the EANM (European Association of Nuclear Médecine)  is the world’s leading event in nuclear medicine. This itinerant congress has welcomed the participation of Wallonia Export & Investment Agency (AWEX) since 2017. This year, it will be held in Barcelona from October 4 to 8, with the presence of nine Walloon companies representative of the region’s strong ecosystem in this field.

Unique value chain in Wallonia

The nuclear medicine industry relies on the use of radioactivity to diagnose and treat certain diseases. It encompasses nuclear imagery, dosimetry, radiopharmacy, equipment for isotopes (cyclotrons) and biomarkers (synthesizers) productio. Wallonia has established a unique nuclear medicine value chain, notably in isotope production, radiolabeling techniques, radiopharmacy, dosimetry, clinical applications, logistics, education, and training. Wallonia ranks among the world’s top five producers of medical radioisotopes.

Wallonia ecosystem: strengths and opportunities

Key assets of the Walloon ecosystem include a long-standing expertise and technological leadership in radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production equipment, a dense network of actors and a comprehensive system including logistics, advanced clinical research in new nuclear therapies, as well as academic expertise and dedicated university certificates. Also notable is the recognized expertise of the AFCN (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control). Moreover, Belgium has a high density of nuclear imaging equipment and therefore a high concentration of specialists. The sector benefits from continuous technological innovation supported by significant public and private investments.

As far as collaboration opportunities with Wallonia-based companies go, they include different radioisotope production projects (with the associated public funding), an increasing interest for big pharma and specialized funds, and the ambition of the Region to become a hub for radiopharmaceutical innovation.

Participation of Wallonia

The EANM 2024 edition attracted nearly 180 exhibitors and 8,641 participants. This year, nine companies will be present on the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency island booth of 132 m². A strong Walloon presence (alongside the individual booths for companies such as IBA, Trasis and Telix),  significantly enhances its global visibility in both entrepreneurship and foreign investment potential. EANM is the ideal platform for nuclear medicine companies to grow their business and forge partnerships. It is also a prime opportunity to promote Wallonia as an attractive and strategic location for innovative radiopharma SMEs—with a particular focus on theranostics—as well as for production actors, building on its unique strengths.

The nine companies on AWEX’ booth are:

ABSCINT
Abscint specializes in advanced in vivo imaging diagnostics, focusing on developing innovative PET tracers using single-domain antibodies (sdAbs) for precision targeting.
