From India to Wallonia and Wallonia to India: Building Bridges for Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Growth

By Vijay Jain — Wallonia.be Brand Ambassador, India

For more than three decades, my professional journey has been shaped by one recurring theme: connecting technology, people, markets and opportunities across borders .

I have had the opportunity to work with technology companies, governments, public-sector organizations, entrepreneurs and business leaders across India, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. My experience has particularly focused on technology-led transformation, e-Governance, public-sector solutions, international business development, market entry and strategic partnerships.

Today, through Transform-X , I work with technology startups and scale-ups seeking to expand beyond their home markets, helping them understand new ecosystems, identify appropriate partners and develop practical routes to international markets.

It is from this perspective that I see an exciting opportunity in building stronger bridges between India and Wallonia .

Why Wallonia?

Wallonia represents an ecosystem where technology, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development come together.

Its strengths in technological innovation, digital technologies, engineering, life sciences, agrifood, GreenTech and sustainable development create interesting possibilities for international collaboration. What particularly interests me is not simply the opportunity to enter another European market, but the possibility of connecting complementary capabilities, ideas and people .

India has a rapidly expanding technology and startup ecosystem, with entrepreneurs developing solutions across digital transformation, artificial intelligence, digital payments, GovTech, Smart Cities, enterprise technology, fintech, health technology, AgriTech and other emerging fields.

Wallonia, with its strong knowledge base, research capabilities, innovative companies and European connectivity, brings a different but complementary set of strengths.

The opportunity lies in connecting these ecosystems.

From India to Wallonia

For Indian technology companies and startups, Europe can represent much more than a collection of individual markets. It can provide access to sophisticated customers, research and innovation networks, strategic partnerships and new opportunities for international growth.

My work through Transform-X is focused on helping companies make that transition more effectively.

I see potential for relevant Indian startups and scale-ups to discover Wallonia as an ecosystem for technology collaboration, innovation, partnerships, research and European market access .

This could be particularly relevant in areas such as:

Digital Transformation | GovTech | Digital Government | Digital Payments | Smart Cities | UrbanTech | Digital Twins | Infrastructure Technology | AI | FinTech | AgriTech | Sustainable Technology

The objective should not be to simply export products. It should be to create relationships that lead to collaboration, adaptation, co-innovation and shared value .

From Wallonia to India

The bridge must work in both directions.

India is not only a large market; it is also a rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem with a deep technology talent base, ambitious entrepreneurs, expanding digital infrastructure and a growing appetite for innovative solutions.

For Walloon companies and innovative SMEs, India can offer opportunities to explore new customers, technology partnerships, distribution networks, innovation collaborations and long-term market possibilities.

My experience across international markets has taught me that successful market entry begins with understanding , not selling.

Understanding the ecosystem.
Understanding the customer.
Understanding local requirements.
Understanding the right partner.
And, above all, understanding where genuine mutual value exists.

That is the approach I would like to bring to India–Wallonia engagement.

Technology as the Connecting Layer

Technology can become one of the strongest connecting layers between the two ecosystems.

My own professional experience has been deeply connected with digital transformation and government technology. I have worked around e-Governance and public-sector technology and have engaged with government institutions and technology organizations in multiple international markets.

Today, digital transformation is moving into a new phase. Artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, digital payments, data platforms, Smart Cities, Digital Twins, automation and connected systems are creating opportunities to rethink how governments, businesses and communities operate.

Both India and Europe are addressing many of these challenges, although often from different perspectives.

That difference can be an advantage.

Different perspectives can create better innovation when they are brought together.

Indian companies can learn from European approaches to technology, regulation, research and sustainability. Walloon companies can benefit from India's scale, entrepreneurial energy, technology talent and rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

The bridge between the two can therefore become a platform for two-way learning and innovation .

Technology and Sustainable Innovation

My interest in this relationship also extends beyond digital technology.

I believe the next generation of international business will increasingly be shaped by the convergence of technology and sustainability .

My engagement with emerging areas such as AgriTech, food technology, biotechnology, functional foods and sustainable food systems has given me another perspective on how innovation can address real-world challenges.

This includes areas such as sustainable agriculture, food processing, alternative and functional ingredients, resource efficiency and technology-enabled value chains.

The opportunity is to bring together technological innovation and sustainability in ways that create measurable economic and societal value.

This is an area where India and Wallonia can potentially learn from one another and build meaningful partnerships.

Building Relationships, Not Just Markets

Internationalization is often described in terms of market size, revenue and investment.

But behind every successful international relationship are people, trust and shared objectives .

My ambition as a Wallonia.be Brand Ambassador is therefore not simply to promote Wallonia as a destination or to promote India as a market.

It is to help create informed connections .

To introduce the right people to each other.

To help entrepreneurs discover opportunities they may not otherwise see.

To share stories of innovation.

To encourage dialogue between technology ecosystems.

And, where appropriate, to help transform those conversations into meaningful partnerships.

A Two-Way Bridge

I see my role as a bridge that operates in both directions:

India → Wallonia
Helping Indian technology companies, startups, scale-ups and innovation stakeholders discover Wallonia's technology, research, entrepreneurship and European opportunities.

Wallonia → India
Helping Walloon companies, innovators and ecosystem stakeholders better understand India's technology landscape, entrepreneurial energy, digital transformation and market opportunities.

Between these two directions lies something even more valuable:

India ↔ Wallonia

A space for collaboration, knowledge exchange, co-innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable growth.

I am honored to join the Wallonia.be Brand Ambassadors network and look forward to learning from the Walloon ecosystem, meeting its entrepreneurs and innovators, sharing its stories with audiences in India, and contributing wherever I can to stronger connections between our two regions.

For me, this is not simply about building a bridge between two markets.

It is about building a bridge between two innovation ecosystems—and creating opportunities for people, ideas and technology to cross it in both directions.
