iTraceiT: Walloon Traceability Expertise Making Its Mark on International Markets

Founded in 2021, iTraceiT has developed an innovative solution that tracks the origin and journey of high-value products, from precious gemstones to cocoa. Already operating on four continents, the Walloon company continues to expand internationally. Its success was recently recognised at the 2026 Wallonia International Business Awards.

Since 2021, iTraceiT has been developing a neutral and independent traceability platform designed to secure high-value supply chains, including diamonds, precious gemstones, jewellery and luxury goods, with its activities now extending to cocoa and gold. Its solution enables products to be traced "from mine to consumer".

"Our goal is to share information about product origins, including regulatory information, but also the expertise and craftsmanship of the communities involved in creating these products. We follow the journey from producer to consumer, conveying a wide range of information that meets legal requirements as well as marketing needs, while above all reassuring consumers about the responsible sourcing and provenance of the products they purchase," explains Guy De Smet, CEO and founder of iTraceiT.

Five years after its launch, iTraceiT has built a community of more than 140 clients across the global supply chain. "We are already active on four continents, with clients in the United States, India, Europe and Africa. Our ambition is to move from being recognised as a credible player to becoming an authority in our field. We want to strengthen our ties with regulatory bodies, but above all work more closely with producers and all those involved in the various stages of supply chain transformation. This will enable us to showcase their expertise and craftsmanship and communicate that information to the end consumer," adds Guy De Smet.

In practical terms, iTraceiT operates through a QR code-based system. "When a product is created, it is assigned a token, which essentially takes the form of a QR code. A wide range of information can be linked to this QR code, including photographs, videos and documents. All this information, together with the various QR codes, is stored in a fully protected database managed internally by the company responsible for keeping the information up to date," explains Guy De Smet.

"For example, a rough diamond producer may sell a stone to a craftsman who cuts and polishes it. The craftsman then sells it to a jeweller, who in turn sells it to a brand, and so on. At every stage, different QR codes contain specific traceability information," he explains.

The solution is not limited to precious gemstones but can be applied to virtually any type of product.

Wallonia Starter Business Award 2026

The company was recently honoured with a 2026 Wallonia Starter Business Award at the Wallonia International Business Awards.

Established in 1991 as the Grand Prix Wallonie à l'Exportation (Wallonia Export Grand Prix) and renamed the Wallonia International Business Awards in 2022, these biennial awards recognise the efforts and achievements of Walloon companies in international markets. They celebrate businesses that contribute to raising their own international profile while strengthening the global reputation of Walloon products, services and expertise.

"I am extremely proud and delighted for all my colleagues," concludes Guy De Smet.
